Yuri Kryakvin

Biography

Yuri Dmitrievich Kryakvin was born in 1948 in Leningrad into the family of an architectural engineer. He studied at the Serov School but was mostly self-taught, a regular at the Writers' Book Shop, and a collector of jazz records. He did not pay attention to official institutions and was ready to show and sell his works anywhere, even on Nevsky Prospekt. The works of these years revealed the artist's passion for Picasso's painting style and a good knowledge of his early works, works of the era of analytical and synthetic cubism and the classicist period. Since 1972, Kryakvin's life and work have been connected with Valaam, where he lived for 12 years and created a series of works dedicated to the people living on the island. In the 1980s, Yuri Kryakvin turned to the theme of music and created a series of portraits of theater people close to him. At this time, the artist creates numerous violins as well as non-figurative musical works.

Kryakvin's personal exhibitions were held in Düsseldorf, New York, and cities in Japan, Finland, and Russia. A large number of his works are in private collections in Russia, Germany, Belgium, Finland, the USA, and France. Part of his works are kept in the collections of the Russian Museum.

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Georgy Vitsin, a monument to the great actor was erected in Zelenogorsk. The author of the monument is Yuri Kryakvin.
